General Purpose of Position

Working with the GM CMF team, you will have the opportunity to contribute to a larger connected global design team working on leading, world-class products in production design.

Your role is to help us see the future – and you will contribute to the styling and functional design development through your expertise in visualization. You will work alongside the CMF Design and Leadership teams to implement Color, Materials and Finishes concepts through the use of UnReal Engine, which will facilitate conversation, aid in visualizing ideas and create new processes within Design. Explore the limits and appropriate use of UE as a tool. Make presentations of new thoughts and innovations, both orally and visually. Frequent contact with others outside the work group.

Basic Requirement:

Proficient Knowledge of Unreal Engine:

  • How to operate/navigate Unreal Engine UI

  • Basic foundational skills in creating blueprints and visual scripting

  • Adept knowledge of material editor graph (in UE). Must be able create customizable parameters, material instances, and functions

  • Proof of skill with lighting and rendering 3D objects within an Unreal Engine Environment. Renders should be exclusively captured in Unreal Engine for this position

  • Confidence in creating Master Material Systems that optimize material workflow when applying textures for 3D assets. Master Material Systems should have multiple parameters to customize and tweak through material instances

  • Experience in Substance Suite (Designer & Painter):

  • Strong skills in designing, implementing and maintaining material pipelines and physically based rendering workflows (PBR)

  • Have ability to create materials in substance designer/painter and export them into the Unreal Engine

  • Preferred Skills and Abilities:

    Material/Shader Breakdowns:

  • Provide examples with breakdowns of textures (Base Color, Ambient Occlusion, Normals, Roughness, Metallic)

  • Graph Editor Screenshot(s) of how you created material system.

  • Materials should be as complex as the following:

  • Plastics

  • Leather

  • Fabrics/Grains

  • Glass

  • Rubbers

  • Steel, Aluminum, copper (Metals)

  • Maximizing texture quality within a 0-1 UV tiling space. (How to make a tiling texture look seamless)

  • Textures should be able to utilize imperfection masks (dirt, scratches, fingerprint smudges, etc… to look as authentic as possible)
  • Rendering capabilities with Photoshop and Illustrator.

  • Knowledge of current trends in design.

  • Creative proficiency with supporting portfolio.

  • Good oral and written communications skills.

  • Good Interpersonal skills to work effectively with others.

  • Education and Training:

    Currently working towards a Bachelor's or Advanced degree in the following (or related fields):

  • Industrial Design

  • Textile Design

  • Interior Design

  • Fashion Design

  • Jewelry Design

  • Product Design

  • Automotive Design

  • Must be graduating on or after December 2023.

  • Onsite: This position requires an employee to be on-site on a full- time basis.
  • GM will provide a one-time lump sum taxable stipend payment to each student selected for the 2023 Student Program
