Description

Hybrid: This position does not require an employee to be on-site full-time to perform most effectively. The employee's role enables them to work at a GM facility or off-site as frequently as needed or desired. This position requires an employee to be on-site on average 3 days per week

The Role

The Dangerous Goods Specialist is responsible for ensuring compliance with regulations and guidelines related to the handling, storage, transportation, and documentation of dangerous goods. This critical role involves coordinating and maintaining accurate records, facilitating communication, and implementing safety measures to minimize risks associated with hazardous materials.

What You'll Do

  • Regulatory Compliance: Stay up-to-date with local, federal, and international regulations regarding dangerous goods handling, transportation, and documentation. Ensure compliance with applicable laws, permits, and licenses.

  • Documentation Management: Create, review, and maintain accurate records of dangerous goods policies, procedures and work instructions, including safety data sheets (SDS), Hazardous waste manifests, shipping documents, and incident reports.

  • Risk Assessment: Conduct/support with dangerous goods audits to identify potential hazards associated with dangerous goods. Develop and implement appropriate safety protocols, procedures, and controls to mitigate risks and ensure employee safety and safety in commerce.

  • Training and Education: Support training sessions and provide educational materials to employees involved in the handling, storage, or transportation of dangerous goods. Promote awareness of safety protocols, emergency response procedures, and best practices.

  • Communication and Coordination: Liaise with internal departments, suppliers, freight forwarders, and regulatory authorities to coordinate the safe handling, storage, and transportation of dangerous goods. Facilitate effective communication, develop and distribute the DG monthly scorecard and ensure documentation is updated and changes communicated.

  • Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities to enhance operational efficiency, minimize risks, and streamline processes related to dangerous goods management. Propose and implement improvements (ie., dangerous goods dashboard, hazmat material list)

    Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Education: A bachelor's degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, logistics, or a related field OR 4+ years related work experience in lieu of degree required.

  • Experience: 2+ years prior experience in dangerous goods, logistics, and/or regulatory compliance is required.

  • Knowledge: Basic understanding of applicable regulations and guidelines for dangerous goods management. Familiarity with classification systems, packaging requirements, labeling standards, and documentation practices is essential.

  • Attention to Detail: Strong attention to detail to ensure accurate classification, labeling, and documentation of dangerous goods. Ability to identify potential hazards and implement appropriate safety measures.

  • Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively interact with internal stakeholders, suppliers, and regulatory authorities. Ability to convey complex information clearly and concisely.

  • Organizational Skills: Strong organizational and time management skills to prioritize tasks, manage documentation, and meet deadlines. Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Problem-Solving Abilities: Analytical mindset with the ability to identify and resolve issues related to dangerous goods handling. Proactive approach to anticipate and mitigate potential risks.

  • Travel of up to 50% to GM facilities within North America required

  • A bachelor's degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, logistics, or a related field preferred

  • Relevant certifications in dangerous goods handling and transportation (e.g., IMDG, IATA) are advantageous.

  • Experience in incident response, risk assessment, or similar roles is beneficial.
