Description

Automotive lighting has continued to increase in importance for brand recognition and as an element to excite customers and create a unique appearance which stands out in a crowded marketplace. With the advent of new technologies and assembly practices GM is seeking a Design Lighting Lead in its Cadillac studio to liaison and collaborate with engineering to ensure the design studios are at the forefront of technology executed with quality and exceptional appearance.

This position will require a technical expertise in the photometrics for vehicle lighting driven by an aesthetic design vision, ensuring the final product meets engineering requirements and design aesthetics.

This position requires an employee to be on-site on a full-time basis.

Responsibilities of Design Lighting Lead
  • Support Design Studio teams to inform of the best technical options as well as help / support / guide implementation techniques and processes throughout program timeline
  • Collaborate among multiple Design Studios, especially across brands to ensure the best execution and knowledge is shared across GM brands / vehicle platforms
  • Diplomatically enhance the critical relationships among Design Studio and Engineering, Manufacturing and Quality to eliminate roadblocks in achieving aesthetic objectives
  • Proactively tackle design issues when they arise and propose decisive solutions to achieve a mutually beneficial solution
  • Work collaboratively with GM Engineering and Purchasing early in a program process to ensure the best technology options are offered for future vehicles with appropriate competitive or leading content and are accurately priced

  • Smooth, fluid lighting animations
  • Quality visual part interface in lighting bezels
  • The ability to recognize the intangible and subjective design / aesthetic aspects of lighting elements
  • Knowledge of current and future trends in design, technology, production methods and materials
  • Understanding of program timelines and proactive regarding task completion
  • Demonstrated ability to interface, collaborate and communicate effectively with internal and external team members
  • Understanding of and ability to negotiate criteria with engineering partners
  • Proficient Alias skills in order to collaborate with Engineering / Design teams and external partners
  • Capability to build animations in Alias or other software to communicate lighting signatures for approval
  • Knowledge
  • Engineering-based knowledge to be capable of recognizing / proposing competitive sections to enable the most efficient and competitive package and costs
  • Understanding and expertise of photometrics and heat dissipation issues associated with LED packaging and distribution of light to meet legal and aesthetic requirements
  • Education + Work Experience:
  • Bachelor's Degree with major in Industrial / Product / Automotive Design or Engineering or equivalent experience
  • Extensive industry experience in mastering lighting technologies for implementation into production automotive applications
  • Experience in lighting component tool and die fabrication methods in order to be able to challenge execution criteria/constraint if required to enable design themes
