Summary

The Engineering Development Technician IV will have the opportunity to work on a variety of advanced unmanned system prototypes to develop solutions for a variety of defense and commercial applications. The Engineering Development Technician will be responsible for assisting projects and programs with the building, integration and maintenance of aircraft and other robotic systems. This takes many forms, from the building of small components, tools and test fixtures, to the full assembly and upkeep of complete prototype systems. The ideal candidate is a creative thinker to work on rapid prototypes for the quick evaluation of new ideas and concepts.

Position Responsibilities

  • Conducts mechanical and electrical testing and troubleshooting of integrated systems
  • Uses a variety of machine shop tools and other items including CNC mills, 3D printers, as well as a variety of internal laboratory tools. Requires use of soldering iron to assist with electrical assembly
  • Assists with designing and conducting tests including experiments, ground testing and flight testing
  • Meets scheduled timelines and, in some cases, aggressive deadlines to have hardware ready for project milestones
  • Effectively document important processes and build techniques for successful readiness of equipment and transition of responsibilities to other individuals
  • Follows engineering designs and building concepts/prototypes and assist with testing and data collection. Often times the designs may be incomplete and will require independent design and back and forth communication to finalize and prototype
  • As a highly skilled specialist, the Technician contributes to the development of concepts and techniques
  • Consistently works on complex assignments requiring independent action and a high degree of initiative to resolve issues
  • Acts independently to determine methods and procedures on new assignments. Often acts as facilitator and team leader
  • Position requires general upkeep and setup of development spaces and test areas for projects and prototyping. This includes ordering equipment, maintaining tools, and being proactive on safety issues/concerns

  • Basic Qualifications (Required Skills & Experience)

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent is required
  • Minimum of 6+ years of technical experience (in a field of small electronics, robotics assembly and maintenance, electro-mechanical integration, or similar field) or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • 4+ years of that experience should be focused on professional Research and Development (R&D) : This includes building and/or prototyping electro- mechanical systems while offering assistance in design feedback, testing and troubleshooting on an electrical and mechanical level. (Aerospace experience preferred)
  • Requires general proficiency with Microsoft Office Software and general computer skills
  • Experienced in development of build/assembly documentation
  • Demonstrated familiarity with aircraft and/or Remote Control (R/C) experience
  • Experienced using machine shop tools and shows proficiency with these systems
  • Experienced in building fixtures, tools and parts or electrical devices
  • Requires local/domestic travel (both driving and flying) to test site locations and participating in development testing
  • Must have a valid Driver's license and clean driving record
  • Periods of development may require long irregular hours around deadlines, weekends and some holidays and in field test environments
  • Other Qualifications & Desired Competencies

  • Higher education and Welding certifications are desired
  • Candidate may have the opportunity to receive FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot's license but not required
  • Exposure and use of 3D modeling and programming software (such as SolidWorks/SURFCAM) desired
  • Exposure to 3D additive manufacturing technology desired
  • Experience working with composites, either wet layup or prepreg materials, is desired
  • Skills as a machinist and with GD&T desired
  • Demonstrates competency in interpreting instructions given by engineering team (verbal or written), asking for clarity where needed, and updating or generation of documentation, which could include drawings and procedures
  • Able to excel in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment, where small teams share a broad variety of duties
  • Displays strong initiative and drive to accomplish goals and meet company objectives
  • Takes ownership and responsibility for current and past work products
  • Has effective problem-solving, analytical, interpersonal and communication skills. Focuses on teamwork, collaboration and puts the success of the team above one's own interests
  • Physical Demands

  • Requires manual dexterity and ability to effectively use machining tools, both manual and automated
  • Requires use of soldering iron to assist with electrical assembly
  • Ability to move and/or carry heavy equipment
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, both hot and cold, and varying terrains
  • Ability to meet California laws governing the acceptable use of a respirator.
  • Capable of lifting up to 50 pounds as well as objects of varying sizes and shapes for shipment to and set up at various customer training sites
  • Required to sit and stand for long periods; talk, hear, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer and/or telephone keyboard
  • Ability to work in a manufacturing environment
  • The salary range for this role is:

    $32 - $47
