Summary

The Senior Manufacturing Engineer (Composites) develops, implements, and maintains methods, tools, and processes in the manufacturing or fabrication of composite parts or assemblies for AeroVironment's Unmanned Air Vehicles. In this position they will contribute to the sustainment and improvement of existing products & processes and collaborate with product design teams to achieve design for manufacturability on new projects.

Duties

  • Responsible for composite manufacturing process development, implementation, and continuous improvement
  • Acts as a technical expert in composite materials as well as composite manufacturing processes and techniques.
  • Troubleshoot design and manufacturing problems and provide recommendations on production processes, design, material, and tools.
  • Creation and review of manufacturing build procedures and tooling to ensure compliance with design requirements and build processes.
  • Provides direction for manufacturability to design and technical staff on composite design projects.
  • Collaborates with suppliers and contract manufacturers to ensure receipt of conforming parts and assemblies
  • Disposition non-conforming parts, identify root cause, and implement corrective and/or preventive action to reduce scrap and rework.
  • Implement Lean Manufacturing principles and apply Six Sigma methodology to achieve continuous improvement in productivity, quality, and lead time
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Basic Qualifications (Required Skills & Experience)

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant Engineering discipline (Manufacturing, Mechanical, Aerospace, etc.) is required or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience; Advanced degree is preferred.
  • Minimum of 8+ years of demonstrated experience in aerospace structural composite manufacturing engineering.
  • Experience with drawings and BOMs; Engineering Change systems; Quality systems for non-conforming parts and corrective action.
  • Significant experience with CAD/CAM software and composite ply definition
  • Demonstrated knowledge in fiberglass and carbon composites design, including composites stacking sequence.
  • Experienced in composite manufacturing processes: manual layup, AFP, autoclave operation, hot press, assembly processes, etc.
  • Relevant hands-on/manufacturing experience with composite materials
  • Demonstrates significant understanding of aircraft composite materials
  • Project Management Experience a plus
  • Experienced and proficient with MS Office applications and other office productivity tools
  • Other Qualifications & Desired Competencies

  • Education / experience or aircraft subsystems in R&D environment is preferred.
  • Follows standard practices and procedures when analyzing situations or data from which answers can be readily obtained. Completes assigned tasks within schedule and budget
  • Demonstrated ability to learn professional concepts and appropriately applies concepts & procedures to resolve routine issues within the technical discipline

  • The salary range for this role is:

    $110,739 - $166,109
