Description

Hybrid: This position does not require an employee to be on-site full- time. This position requires an employee to be onsite 1-3 times per week and will require semi-regular, off-site interaction at team facilities and travel to isolated NASCAR series events.

As a NASCAR Performance Engineer with a focus on GM NASCAR Truck and Xfinity Series team support, you will be responsible for both running the group's Truck and Xfinity Series reporting and conveying this knowledge to GM sponsored teams. GM Motorsports has not directly supported NASCAR Truck and Xfinity series firsthand, thus, understanding customer needs, areas and extent of previous support, and the how previously developed NASCAR Cup Series methods/processes can most effectively be adapted for Truck and Xfinity Series support will be an early priority. Initially, this will entail close collaboration with currently contracted, third-party Truck and Xfinity support staff.

Once support structure is established, weekly reporting will include evaluation of prior race strategies, caution histories, a summary of all applicable findings across the GM Motorsports group, and/or analyses of GM teams' performance. Provide teams with simulations : building vehicle models for desktop simulation and Driver in the Loop Simulator (DiL) and implementing setup studies to include large batch DOEs and targeted individual simulations to understand track specific performance sensitivities. These setup and sensitivity studies will use internally developed tools in addition to those shared across GM Motorsports. Team up with those developing simulation and modeling tools specifically for Xfinity and Truck Series application and those supporting other Series to share approaches and analysis techniques.

To excel at this role, your comfort level in theoretical areas of vehicle modeling, simulation, and hands-on aspects of assisting teams with testing and data analysis will be key. With the purpose of improving on-track performance of GM Truck and Xfinity series teams, successful communication with supporting organizations is essential; developing and maintaining relationships to best understand needs, effectively convey findings, and continually increase the use and application of engineering tools. To accomplish this, regular travel to NASCAR Truck and Xfinity series race events will be required .

What you will do:

  • Play a key role in determining future development directions for GM Motorsports NASCAR Truck & XFinity Series support by leveraging motorsports knowledge/experience, performance analysis methods employed in supporting other series, and understanding of customer needs through close partnership with internal and external GM motorsports groups

  • Coordinate with other internal GM Motorsports groups to share information and assist with implementation of newest advances in understanding, methods, and tools

  • Provide teams recommendations consolidating the newest findings throughout the internal GM Motorsports group

  • Conceptualize, prototype, and deploy new and advanced analysis methods

  • Conduct vehicle performance and vehicle dynamics studies – virtually using simulation or through planning and running physical test either in a lab/rig environment or on-track

  • Package study findings into reports for GM sponsored motorsports teams and following up to reinforce understanding in-person. Effectively conveying findings and enhancing end-users understanding of the topics is of primarily importance, thus regular, in-person collaboration with GM sponsored organizations is essential for success

  • Assist in correlation of any new methods and from results past recommendations to safeguard methods continually improve

  • To succeed in this challenging role, we are looking for a:

  • Initiative-taking individual with a broad experience in vehicle dynamics and professional motorsports

  • Highly explorative individual, client-oriented and structured, with remarkable relationship and communicative skills

  • Performer, with the ability to multitask in a dynamic, ever-changing environment, bringing a sound work ethic and integrity

  • Additional Description

    Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Physics, or a related subject

  • 5 years of engineering experience in a professional environment with 3 years of motorsports experience; experience in NASCAR Truck/XFinity series with subsequent top-tier involvement preferred

  • Working knowledge of vehicle at-track procedures and at-track vehicle optimization including technical inspection, race procedures, race car setup refinement, and race strategy/fuel strategy

  • Experience with a variety of vehicle testing methods including SPMM/K&C, aerodynamic testing, 7-post, and at-track tests and an understanding of simulation workflows in a professional motorsports organization

  • Effective communication skills with a preference for collaboration and an ardent desire to spread knowledge, guide less experienced engineers, and elevate the understanding of the larger group

  • Solid teammate, able to work a flexible schedule, possess an elevated level of integrity
