Description

The Role:

The principal software engineer is responsible and accountable for the quality and cohesion of software components within an assigned domain and their conformance to approved GM IT standards and alignment with the future state enterprise and domain architectural goals. This includes both hands-on development of IT technology solutions as well as management of various technical initiatives. This role needs to be able to look across the assigned domain to ensure consistent alignment of technical solutions with the business goals and objectives of the supported unit. The principal software engineer provides industry leading technical direction and guidance to various project teams to ensure appropriate and cost-effective application of GM approved technologies. Ensures appropriate and effective data integration across multiple applications. The principal software engineer is expected to show expertise with various technical patterns, technologies, and architecture management processes. As a senior team member, you will mentor and direct other software engineers while contributing to multi-layered solution architectures that comprehend and specify business, application, data and infrastructure designs.

What you'll do:

  • Responsible for leading the definition of system architectures which includes evaluation, selection, and integration of necessary technical components to create solution designs that support the defined functional and non-functional requirements.
  • You will be required to have broad software project delivery experience in leading technical efforts developing applications using a variety of tools, languages, frameworks and technologies
  • Demonstrate mastery of numerous programming languages, tools and/or technologies
  • Performance tuning, usability assessment/improvement, automation technologies
  • Understands and comprehends the implications of technology decisions and recommendations across multiple domain areas.
  • Develop best practices to ensure software functionality, usability, reliability and availability.
  • Promotes innovation and application of emerging IT technologies within the context of a business domain area.
  • Introduces technology innovation opportunities to the GM IT organization. Participates in the evaluation of new technologies for inclusion as GM IT standards.
  • Provides guidance, coaching and/or training to others as appropriate. Holds themselves and others accountable for demonstrating GMs values and cultural behaviors. Models GM behaviors and creates a winning culture.
  • Design, code, test and debug complex software while developing new functionality, and enhancing existing functionality, providing leadership to guide team and satisfy business requirements, both internal and external
  • Work with project team to design prototypes to validate application functionality.
  • Consult with and advise product owners/business partners to define requirements and software design
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Requirments:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Engineering, or a related field (Master's degree preferred)
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience as a Software Engineer or similar role
  • Strong knowledge of software development principles, methodologies, and best practices
  • Expertise in designing and implementing scalable and distributed systems.
  • Proficiency in multiple programming languages such as Java, SQL, Spring Boot
  • Deep understanding of system integration patterns and technologies (e.g., REST, SOAP, ESB)
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to analyze complex business requirements and propose appropriate solutions.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to effectively communicate technical concepts to both technical and non- technical stakeholders.

    Compensation: The expected base compensation for this role is : $112,100 - $175,400 . Actual base compensation within the identified range will vary based on factors relevant to the position.

    Bonus Potential: An incentive pay program offers payouts based on company performance, job level, and individual performance.
