Work Arrangement

Hybrid – Position does not require an employee to be on-site full-time but the general expectation is that the employee be onsite an average of 3 days per week. The primary work location will be at the Global Technical Center in Warren, MI.

The Role

GM's Manufacturing Engineering team is driving the future of electric vehicle technology forward by developing world class manufacturing processes for our battery cell electrode coatings. We are looking to enhance our talent pool by adding a hands-on experienced Coating Engineer to support the process development of electrode mixing and coatings used in our battery programs.

This position will help in achieving a competitive advantage in our manufacturing processes.

What You'll Do

  • Provide process engineering support for the coating of electrodes for battery and fuel cells membranes.
  • Work with IT to implement real time data visualization tools/data historian software systems for mixing & coating equipment.
  • Lead the development of project for high-speed machine vision inspection for coating defect detection along with defect mapping and roll marking.
  • Lead the process development of newthe fuel cell laser cutting system methods at OEM builder for the lab systems.
  • Support the design and build of new battery cell slurry mixing and coating equipment (including support for international partners)(Korea).
  • Support the design and build of fFuel cCell ink mixing and coating equipment (Korea/Japan).(including support for international partners)
  • Provide OEM run-off assistance by utilizing cross functional experience to drive process quality improvement and process efficiency improvement.
  • Provide technical guidance and hands-on support at OEMs for all aspects of a coating operations including mixing, slurry/ink delivery systems, conveyance, web handling, coating, and drying.
  • Collect and analyze process and product data to drive decision making.
  • Develop and implement strategies for scale up of battery electrode processes.
  • Assist in the specification, procurement and qualification of slurry and coating equipment
  • Work with Product Engineering to ensure manufacturing and design requirements are compatible.

    Your Skills and Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • 2+ years of experience in roll-to-roll coating processes.
  • Basic understanding of formulation, mixing protocols and coating processes.
  • Degree in chemical engineering, materials engineering, mechanical engineering (with strong materials background) or relevant degree.
  • What Will Give You a Competitive Advantage (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Direct experience with lithium-ion battery cell coatings and/or fuel cells.
  • Experience in the procurement of mixing, coating, or processing equipment.
  • Statistical problem solving i.e., DFSS Black Belt or Red-X.
  • Relevant Master's degree.
