Summary

The Senior Reliability Engineer is responsible for the overall Reliability, Availability, and Maintainability (RAM) approach for AeroVironment's Unmanned Air Vehicles and Ground Support Equipment. This position will be a part of the Systems Engineering team, working directly with the Program Chief Engineer, Program Management, and Flight Operations team to develop and refine the RAM program. This position is expected to be the RAM lead for UAS programs within AeroVironment, including ownership of generation and maintenance of contract deliverables).

Position Responsibilities

  • Is the technical lead for programs with the Medium Unmanned Aircraft Systems (MUAS) group, with regards to Reliability, Availability, and Maintainability (RAM), requiring minimal oversight from leadership.
  • Engages with Program Chief Engineer and/or customer to understand and develop a success plan for achieving system and program requirements
  • Evaluates customer-provided documentation for compliance with requirements; and identifies system impacts, cost, schedule, and technical performance risks
  • Originates and develops analysis methods to determine reliability of components, equipment, and processes
  • Creates and maintains necessary customer documentation, such as requirements, RAM plan, and reliability models in DID-compliant CDRL format
  • Prepares technical presentations, and reports for technical design reviews/boards.
  • Works with internal and external customers leads to facilitate the resolution of technical issues, which may include formal root cause analysis efforts - FRACAS.
  • Supports development and refinement of system safety tools such as FMECA (Failure Modes and Criticality Analysis), FHA (Failure Hazard Analysis), and SAR (Safety Assessment Report)
  • Basic Qualifications (Required Skills & Experience)

  • Bachelor's Degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Math) field.
  • 7 years of engineering experience in Component or Reliability Engineering
  • Experience with FMECA/MTTR/MTBF and spares calculations in Windchill or equivalent.
  • Can effectively assess root causes to critical issues, and contribute to sustainability and reliability of products
  • Demonstrates full understanding & knowledge of engineering principles in the technical discipline
  • Ability to generate presentations and present reliability information and findings to a review board in a business setting
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a SECRET DoD clearance.
  • Other Qualifications & Desired Competencies

  • Development and execution of a RAM program in accordance with MIL- HDBK-189C
  • Development of RAM calculations in accordance with NSWC-11
  • Familiarity with RAM predictions in accordance with MIL-HDBK-217F
  • Previous execution of MIL-STD-882E system safety tasks
  • Proven success leading efforts to support a DoD Program of Record
  • Proven success collaborating with Electrical, Software, Mechanical and other System Engineers to define system architecture and requirements
  • Experience in trade studies and requirements/interface definitions.
  • Master's degree in an Engineering field.
  • Physical Demands

  • Ability to walk around the facility on a regular basis to facilitate communication, coordinate tasks and resolve issues.
  • Travel required to domestic US sites – up to 25%.

  • Ability to work in an office and manufacturing environment (Constant)

  • Required to sit and stand for long periods; talk, hear, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer and telephone keyboard (Frequent)
