Description

As we move towards our ZERO ZERO ZERO vision for the future, we are looking to add hardworking individuals to our global manufacturing engineering team! Our diverse team of manufacturing engineers play a crucial role in transforming our facilities through implementing the adoption of ground-breaking technologies.

In this role, your responsibilities will be of a technical nature with decisions made within the limits of general practices, policies and standards. Your work will involve complex manufacturing problems including the need to root cause and follow issues to resolve. You will be responsible for equipment related to the manufacturing process. You will be required to use your independent discernment. Your responsibility may involve coaching others and assigning work to a small group of employees.

This position will be based out of Warren, and is primarily in support of Gear tooling applications. However, cross over experience and work assignment overall to prismatics components can be expected.

The career level tooling engineer is responsible for:

  • Support project tool approvals, plants issues, and Gear Center as required

  • Support continuous improvement projects

  • Approval of cutting tools, and process documentations

  • Diagnose, analyze, and document emergent tooling issues

  • Make decisions on current or future tooling machining strategies, cutting geometries, chip formation, and material selection

  • Support tool setup operations (Zoller, holder selection, Balluff ID)

  • Understand Tool Commodity Management for Production Manufacturing and support supplier discussions

  • Other responsibilities will include:

  • You will analyze and implement product or machinery designs for the best method for manufacturing processes

  • You will propose and evaluate the processes for equipment in assigned area

  • Direct the design, development, and/or improvement of manufacturing processes for assigned area

  • You will keep regular contact with partners outside the work group

  • You will provide direction to small group of technical employees

  • You may evaluate or monitor expenditures for processes and/or equipment

    Hybrid: This position does not require an employee to be on-site full-time to perform most effectively. The employee's role enables them to work at a GM facility or off-site as frequently as needed or desired. This position requires an employee to be onsite a minimum of 3 times per week.

    Additional Description

    Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, or equivalent experience.

  • Strong aptitude for engineering disciplines & problem solving.

  • Strong knowledge and ability to support fast commissioning of machining systems.

  • High degree of organization in self-work, and industrial organization practices and procedures.

  • Preferred:

  • Knowledge of Prismatic & Tooling in general.

  • Understanding of product prints and GD&T

  • Strong technical ability in cutting tool and machining process disciplines, as well as failure and wear modes typical for cutting tools.

  • Extensive knowledge of cutting tool design, application, materials, and diagnostics.

  • Demonstrated high level of analytical ability including experience with structured technical problem; can include RedX or Design for Six Sigma methods.

  • Manufacturing Engineering experience in Engine, Transmission or Hard Metal Machining.

  • Experience with statistical tools and comfortable with reading outputs from measurement systems (hard gage, CMMs, Q-Das, Minitab).

  • Knows how to select tools, build assemblies, specify use parameters (feed / speed) for different tool and workpiece materials, and estimate tool life.
