Role
As a valued researcher with the Research and Development team at GM, innovate through next-generation ideas, identify opportunities and key enablers in EV battery chemistry, cell design, system integration & manufacturing for supporting GM battery technology roadmap with a broad EV portfolio. Support other researchers with advance characterizations and analyses. Lead research and/or experiments to collect required data to validate research ideas in development. Develop uniquely innovative and efficient methods for fast and reliable characterization of battery materials and components. As part of the analysis team, perform failure and root-cause analyses in support of production and warranty issues related to vehicle components using various analytical tools. Write timely high-quality internal research reports, external publications, and records of inventions to detail new insights and research results in your area of expertise.
What You'll Do (Responsibilities)
Perform surface and interface chemistry analyses of battery materials and components
Root cause and failure analysis of vehicle components and materials Develop understanding of material property and performance correlation through detailed material evaluation
Provide characterization and analysis support to different research groups Support maintenance and calibration of analytical instruments
Development of new methods of testing and characterizing batteries and its components at different stages of R&D.
In this role, you will lead analysis of battery materials and their interfaces using SIMS, XPS and other surface chemistry techniques. Develop new, reliable, relevant, and efficient methods of battery cell and component characterization and analysis. Collaborate with team members within and outside of the core group, universities, and national labs, to solve critical issues and provide reliable and applicable solutions. Lead battery R&D or method development projects aligned to GM's EV goals. Generate timely reports, create record of inventions, and present results at relevant team meetings.
Additional DescriptionYour Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications);
Advanced degree in science/engineering fields
7+ years of experience in the characterization of organic and inorganic materials in an industrial environment
Deep understanding and hands-on experience in materials characterization tool such as SIMS, XPS, SEM, XRD, XRF, sample preparation, etc.
Experience generating innovative ideas, proposing new R&D projects, evaluating technologies, planning and executing projects to meet customer needs. Ensure timely protection of all IP
What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
PhD in Materials Science and Engineering/Chemical Engineering/ Mechanical Engineering etc., with emphasis on renewable energy, energy storage and characterization
10+ years of overall Industry experience
Experience in working with lithium-ion battery materials and components
Experience in handling and characterization of air sensitive materials
Deep understanding and hand-on experience in materials characterization tool such as SIMS, XPS, SEM, FIB, EPMA, XRF, ICP, TGA, GCMS, GD-OES, Raman, FTIR, etc.
Experience with battery performance testing and data analysis
Experience with modeling of voltage cycling data to extract useful information
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry and technical developments to grow core technical skills and proficiencies
Fast learner willing to pivot based on corporate objectives
Experience managing relationships and growing partnership with divisional staffs to meet project objectives
Observe and ensure GM and laboratory specific safety rules are followed
Assist lab management in identifying mega-trends in technology and business strategies in the automotive sector
Represent GM as a leader to the external technical and business communities
Lead technical discussions and reviews as an expert in your field and communicate results and progress across the organization.
